Nicholas Pitchford Earns Gamer of the Week Honors
Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s male Gamer of the Week Nicholas Pitchford of Buffalo Track and Field!
Nicholas Pitchford has turned in great performances for Buffalo Track and Field this season. The senior set a school record in the 1600m with at time of 4:19.31 at the Winfield Classic Friday night. With that performance he is the top runner in Single A by over seven seconds. Pitchford also ran a personal best 1:57.45 in the 800m at the Hurricane High School Invitational, which is currently leading Single A by over three seconds. “The season has been going well, our team is coming together at the right time. We get to compete at the Tudors Relays next weekend and go up against Dodridge county which is one of the teams we have to beat to win our second state title,” said Pitchford.
Pitchford won the 800m, 1600m and 4x800m at the 2023 WVSSAC State Track and Field championships, and finished third in the 2023 WVSSAC State Cross Country Championships this year. “A lot of distance runners become methodical, and run at their trained pace. Nick reaches down inside his soul and just finds that extra bit to get the job done,” said Head Track and Field Coach Jamie Burgess.
Pitchford started track and field in sixth grade, and initially ran the hurdles. His freshman year he ran the 800m and started transitioning more to the distance races. “Nick is unique in that he could have excelled in many events such as high jump and hurdles, but I can only put him in 4 events,” said head track and field coach Jamie Burgess. When discussing role models, he pointed to his coaches and Dylan Rich who held the record that he broke on Friday.
Looking ahead, Pitchford says he is excited about states and the opportunity to win back-to-back state titles as a team and in the 4x800m, 1600m, and 800m. This Fall, he plans to attend Glenville State University to run cross county and track and field and major in Elementary Education.
