Injury prevention and diagnosis

Sportsmetrics

We have two therapists certified in Sportsmetrics. This is an injury prevention program that specifically focuses on prevention of an ACL tear in young athletes. This program is research based and scientifically proven to decrease knee ligament injuries in athletes. This program was developed by Dr. Frank Noyes and a team of PTs and ATs. Sportsmetrics utilizes a specific series of plyometric progressions to train the athletes in proper knee/hip/ankle mechanics for safe landing during their individual sport. Enrolling in this program will help prepare your athlete for ultimate performance with a strong foundation in coordination, functional strength and conditioning.

Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA)

SFMA is a 10-item, movement-based diagnostic system. It allows the therapist to first identify dysfunctional, asymmetrical and painful movement patterns, then create a customized treatment plan with manual therapy and therapeutic exercise interventions. This specialized movement assessment focuses on the quality of how you perform one repetition of an everyday movement. Dysfunctional movement in one area of the body can result in compensation that develops overtime. This could potentially lead to injury and pain. SFMA corrects subconscious dysfunctional patterns to solve the root of the problem. The location of pain may not be the source of pain. SFMA works to treat the source to restore pain-free, functional movement patterns.

Sport-specific rehabilitation

We recognize that you want to get back to your sport, and know that the best way to do this during your physical therapy is to use sport-specific rehabilitation. Through this approach, we assess your injury in the context of the specific biomechanics for your sport. This allows us to design a personalized therapy plan that helps you return to your sport as quickly and safely as possible. During your sports therapy, you’ll transition through your entire course of care to perform sport-specific activities in our 18,000 square foot sports complex. In addition, our specialists will build a progression that includes a range of balance, strength and agility exercises. Eventually, as you advance through your therapy plan, these exercises will include those designed to mimic the specific motions of your particular sport. Ultimately, our goal is to help you heal from your injury, while building up your body to perform under the stress of sports – and minimize your risk for reinjury.

Dry needling

This technique is used to help treat trigger points, which are localized areas of soreness in a muscle caused by its inability to relax. Dry needling uses very thin, solid filament needles (similar to acupuncture), which are placed directly into the trigger point, helping to release the muscle.

What can I expect?

If you’re new to physical therapy, we recommend reviewing our new patient info. In addition, throughout treatment you can feel free to ask your therapist and our other staff members any questions about your treatment.
