Justin Lipscomb Earns Gamer of the Week Honors
Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s male Gamer of the Week Justin Lipscomb of Winfield Track and Field!
Justin Lipscomb of Winfield Track and Field has had break out season. The senior broke the school record in the 800m with a time of 1:54.37 at South Point Arthur Lydiard Classic. This is the fastest time in the state this season and a 4 second improvement for Lipscomb over last year. Lipscomb has also run the fastest time in the state this season in the 1600m, running 4:12.98 at the Carlos Akers and Doc Hale Memorial HS Invitational. In the 3200m, Lipscomb has run the fastest time in AA this season running 9:08.16 at the South Invitational which is 29 second improvement over last season. “Justin has been an integral part of our team these past four years, and has been working extremely hard to run the great times he has been producing,” said head coach Shawn Anderson.
“Lipscomb is one of the toughest most humble kids I have ever coached. When he was in middle school, he ran a local 5k and felt his leg break at the mile marker but continued to run all the way to the finish. Then in high school he dealt with mono for a season, but continued to quietly show up, until they were able to diagnose him, and put in work without making excuses. Through all of that he has built up so much mental toughness that when he is in a race with elite competition and everyone is hurting, he can just hurt better than anybody. He is just a special runner, and a good young Christian man. You just know he is going to be successful in whatever he does in life,” said assistant coach Ron Arthur.
Lipscomb started running in 5th grade when he joined a track club ran by Coach Arthur and tried running sprints. Then in middle school he tried cross country, and found that he was better at distance. He says he likes that you can easily and clearly track growth in distance running and that there are no flukes if you ran a time, you ran a time, and nothing else influenced that but you. When discussing role models Lipscomb attributes, a lot of his success to his coaches.
In addition to Track and Field, Lipscomb runs cross country and is a member of DECA at Winfield. After high school, Lipscomb plans to study business and compete in Cross Country and Track and Field at Marshall University.
Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Lipscomb is focused on winning a state championship and improving on his second and fifth place finish at last year’s State Track Meet. The road to WVSSAC State Meet will start on Thursday, when athletes compete at the AA Region IV Championships at Winfield.
