Duffy Earns Gamer of the Week Honors
Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this week’s male Gamer of the Week to Owen Duffy of Hurricane Wrestling!
Owen Duffy of Hurricane wrestling has had a breakout season this year. The senior captain is 37-1 this season and is currently ranked #2 in the state at the 285lb weight class. “The season has been going really well! I worked hard this offseason in the gym, lifting heavy, and then have just been coming into the wrestling room and working hard,” said Duffy.
Duffy reached his 100th career victory and won the Mountain State Athletic Conference title this season. “Owen is a competitor above all. He is deceptively athletic, and really leads by example in the way he wrestles. Off the mat, we count on him to mentor some of our younger wrestlers. He does a great job of that for us,” said head wrestling coach Ryan Wheeler.
Duffy started wrestling in sixth grade when several of his friends decided to wrestle. He loved the sport and decided to stick with it. He says he enjoys the work that is required to win and also being able to see the work pay off. When discussing mentors Duffy pointed to Coach Talbot who has helped him since he started wrestling in sixth grade. In addition to wrestling, Duffy also played on Hurricane’s football team this year.
Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Duffy said he is looking forward to regionals and states. He will be looking to improve on his sixth-place finish in the state tournament last year, and says the goal is to win regionals and states this season.
“Owen has worked hard over the past four years to be strong in the classroom and his sights are set on a career in the Airforce after high school. I am very proud of the young man he has become,” said Wheeler.
Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next week’s male Gamer of the Week Sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc., and The Putnam Herald.
